Unearthing Sheffield’s Lost Automotive Treasures

Meet the author
Born in Sheffield in 1947, Stephen Myers was a motor enthusiast from an early age, preferring to read his brothers ‘Motor Sport’ journals the the ‘comics’ of the day. In 1963 he started his apprenticeship at Coldwell Engineering and Racing, assisting with the preparation and construction of competition cars for the circuits and forest. In 1968 he set up Wisewood Racing Developments, working on a variety of competition saloon cars, single-seaters and general tuning and modification of road cars.

From the love of cars and the desire to pass on his knowledge, he gained his
Certificate in Education at Leeds University in 1974 and became lecturer at
Chesterfield College in Motor Vehicle Engineering. In 1997 he led a group of
students to form the Educational Rally Team which competed in the Peugeot
Challenge that ran within the British Rally Championship. In 1986 Stephen
completed the 1st edition of the ‘Cars from sheffield’ book, during his research he discovered hundreds of Sheffield-Simplex factory engineering drawings and other documentary evidence. All this research inspired him to go on and complete a master’s degree in Local History at Sheffield University.

After retiring from Chesterfield College in 1997, this was only a change in
direction and certainly not stopping from working. Alongside working as a
student assessor in the workplace, he became involved with Kelham Island
Industrial Museum in Sheffield, where he worked on and maintained the Sheffield-Simplex SSK 50HP. At the same time, he also restored his own 1968 Mk 2 Jaguar, which led him and his wife Hilary to set up a wedding car hire business in 2003, adding two more classic Jaguars to the fleet. He also did
freelance work on classic and vintage cars, including the restoration of several Porsche tractors. Now Stephen works as a volunteer at Kelham Island Industrial Museum working on the Sheffield-Simplex LA2a and building up the extensive archives for car production in Sheffield. He loves, whenever possible, to take his own cars or one of the Sheffield-Simplex to Classic
and Vintage car shows, passing on his knowledge and love of the cars.
